The Gift Of Disease Prevention

There was a time when medical doctors were respected with resolute trust. This has changed partly because years ago medical research and development was a much slower process. It has become impossible for practicing physicians to stay current with the avalanche of new research findings, as Dr. Michael Smith, Senior Health Scientist with Life Extension says. Dr. Mike suggests working with your doctor in a complimentary way, while doing your own research. The fifth edition of Life Extension’s Disease Prevention and Treatment book gives you 130 evidence based protocols to combat the diseases of aging. With thousands of scientific articles and clinical experiences from physicians around the world this 1,400 page book is a great place to start. Learn all that you can and practice being your own health advocate now. Chances are, it will be, the way of the future.

Holiday Safety ~ Deck the Halls with No Falls

It is time to deck the halls and hopefully with no falls. Every year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an estimated one third of adults, 65 years and older experience a fall. These falls are the leading cause of injury related deaths among seniors. Dr. JoAnn Fletcher, Aging in Place Specialist, knows how little changes in your home can make a big difference with safety. Paula Levy, Co-Owner of AP-Lifeline says that having a Medical Safety Alert, if an elderly loved one is alone and falls or needs help, is the answer. Paula and Joann have some great gift ideas for the holiday season. If the gift is being bought for an elderly loved one, it is not only their gift. It is a peace of mind gift for the entire family and so well worth it!

Alzheimer’s is one of the cruelest diseases to humanity and heart wrenching to families. More than 5 million people have this dreadful disease and it cannot be prevented, cured or slowed down.  Kerry Peck, Managing Partner of Peck Bloom Elder Law Firm knows it is in your best interest to have legal documents in place, either before or right after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Without legal documents, it is much more likely family breakdowns, sibling rivalry and much more occurs with Alzheimer’s care. End of life documents are very important as Peck Bloom Partner, Tim Ritchey says. An elder law firm, such as Peck Bloom will simplify your legal document process. Best of all, you will be taking care of your loved ones, and hopefully, long before your documents are ever needed.

Antioxidants can slow down oxidative damage, also known as aging. They work most effectively directly from a natural food source, rather than in a synthetic supplement. Brad Wendzel, President of Coloma Frozen Foods knows from experience than many fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants, but nothing is as powerful as Montmorency tart cherry concentrate juice. Tart Cherry juice provides 220 natural occurring antioxidants that can impact osteoporosis, inflammation, arthritis, gout, exercise recovery and sleep. Tart Cherries are the super fruit, containing 19 times more vitamin A than blueberries or strawberries. Vitamin A plays an important role in skin health, eye health and our immune system. Adding only two ounces per day of Montmorency Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate to your favorite beverage will greatly impact your health, as it has beyond medical comprehension for Brad Wendzel!

November 11th, Veterans Day is the day to honor and thank those who have served in the United States Military. We have 24 million U.S. Veterans to thank for our freedoms. As veterans come home, returning to civilian life can be difficult. Support programs are available, although many veterans do not know of them. This is where attorney Mary Markovich comes in, offering a broad range of law related services for veterans. Lance Walker, Managing Director of We Hire Heroes, learned from his personal experience that transferring military duties into a civilian job can be difficult. As with any success, aging is not exempt from the work it takes to accomplish what it takes. A ten year study on aging verified what we already know: to age successfully we must, avoid disease, maintain high cognitive and physical function, and stay actively engaged in life. It sounds so easy, but the problem is, most of us do not think about aging in our younger years. We start thinking about it in our sixties and sometimes not at all. Keep in mind, at age 65, living to 85 means that you still have 23% of your life to live or 7,300 days left. We have the time and ability to age well even as we retire. Simply put your plan in place, stick with it and make 85 look young as you become a centenarian!

Medicare Open Enrollment & ACA

Medicare recipients have the opportunity to shop and compare their Medicare and supplemental plan annually, during open enrollment. This is the time to make sure, you are paying fair market price for what you are getting. Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans can vary greatly. Medicare supplemental plans, A – N are the same, with the only difference being the monthly premium and provider. The ACA has little to effect on Medicare currently, which is music to the ears of seniors. David Wylly, your Medicare Solutions expert will review your current plan or one that you are considering, to make sure that you fully understand, what you are choosing and why. Taking time annually to do this, can provide you with the coverage you need, put extra dollars in your pocket and be well worth your time.

Natural disasters are the stuff that fear is made of. Norris Beren gives us straight talk on tough topics such as disasters, and none of us are exempt from that category. Norris knows how beneficial it is to have plans in place, both a before and just as important, an after plan. It is natural to not want to think about a disaster, much less prepare plans. We so often live our lives with the false assumption, it will never happen to us. Natural disasters put us in place on a fairly regular basis, letting us know the planet, not humanity, is in charge. It takes so little time to plan ahead and it can give you peace of mind, rather than wishing you had of, in the aftermath of a disaster.

Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, will change health care as we know it today. The Affordable Care Act is 2007 pages long with 17,000 new regulations. Geriatric expert Ron Kauffman says it has too much grey area. Open enrollment begins October 1, 2013 and goes through March 31, 2014. Everyone will be required to have health insurance or pay a penalty tax in 2014. The penalties get higher in 2015 and cap out in 2016 at even a higher rate. The IRS will manage ACA to ensure that you are paying your penalty tax if applicable. It will take time to become familiar with the Affordable Care Act, and what we have learned so far could already be changing. Many in our government completely disagree with parts or all of ACA. It could be delayed again and time may be on our side, for this one!

Our health is our greatest wealth, and it can take not having it, to realize this is an absolute truth. As health care continues to change, we are starting to realize our overall wellbeing is just as important. My first guest, Debra K, is bringing her new TV show “Journey into Wellbeing” to every state. She knows what it takes to enhance our wellbeing and stay youthful, as David Himmel, Managing Editor of Chicago Health magazine writes about in their Summer/Fall edition. David’s article, Time to Grow Old, states that through the good and bad, it’s by grace that we age. We continue to grow older in every moment, and we also, gain another moment. Our overall health and wellbeing, no matter where we are on our journey, comes down to personal choices, as does, aging with grace.

The good news is, we are realizing we must become our own health advocate, as Joy Loverde points out. If you are married, staying there may be your answer. If you are loving life in singlehood, then you have your answer as well. Heather Wagenhal sees that being married or single is no longer being done one way or the other. Saying NO with Resiliency

Many people find it very difficult to say NO. It may be out of anxiety, feeling uncomfortable, wanting approval, fear of not being liked…and the list goes on. Steve Olsher, Founder of Reinvention Workshop, talks about the power of YaNo’s. He sees very little grey area with yes and no. Steve believes that the better you know yourself and what you are up to, the easier it is to be straightforward with a yes or a no. Being resilient from the reactions you may get from a no, is another step to becoming who you were meant to be. Learning to acknowledge the negative and still develop a positive perspective, as Dr. Erica Kosal talks about, is moving in the right direction. Sometimes, it’s best to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and just keep moving forward!

Our continuous changing hormones and blood sugar levels play another large part in the symphony of our endocrinology system. One out of every five US adults take pharmaceutical drugs to treat mental health issues, which can lead to prescription addiction. Dr. Steven Walker has patients work through their issues to find that no prescription is needed. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Pharmaceutical company propaganda continues to perpetuate the epidemic of prescription drug abuse along with rogue pharmaceutical internet sites. Out of 10,000 pharmaceutical sites, only 3% are legitimate, as Carmen Catizone, Executive Director of the National Association of Pharmacy Boards discusses. Our country has a prescription epidemic dilemma with one death occurring every 24 minutes, by pharmaceutical grade overdose and many of those from internet sites. If you feel you are addicted, get help before it is too late. If someone you love is addicted, never give up and do the same for them!

Courage is a natural energy force that propels us beyond our fears into a realm where anything is possible. It sounds easy, but often, fear grips us and we get stuck. Sometimes we can get stuck for years and are not able to do anything about it. Tanya Chernova and Joanna Andros, co-authors of “UnderMIND” write about seven subconscious beliefs that sabotage our lives and how to overcome them. With work and daily practice, we can re-program our beliefs and impact our lives. It is a fact, as we age, brain fitness is as important as body fitness and we are learning to measure our joy per minute, which is another important health check. A great place to start with learning to re-program is to simply, change your words, and you will change your life!

Skin care expert, Celeste Hilling says to avoid sun exposure during the strong 10-2 hours, wear sunscreen every day, reapply it every two hours if possible and exfoliate your skin often. Exfoliating helps moisturize our skin and renew skin cells. Protecting our skin from UV rays comes down to common sense or maybe done the Aussie way. They practice, “Slip, Slap, Slop”. The Trust Gap

Trust has been the common thread in past generations, honoring right and wrong responsibly in all relationships. We instinctively knew this was the fabric that bound us together. Today our world view is much more self-centered with trust being less fashionable. Trust – or lack of it – is inherent in every action that we take, and effects everything that we do. Professor Clete Bulach offers five factors to develop openness and trust. It can be improved on and as with anything, it takes work. Jackie Camacho Ruiz, started working on some of those factors when she was only 5 years old. She now uses them daily as a successful entrepreneur. Without trust and openness we flounder and achieve less. Simply said, honor your word, value your reputation and trust and openness will follow you.

Do you remember the feisty, fussy and energetic granny on the popular TV show, The Beverly Hillbillies that aired from 1962-1971? Well, granny was being portrayed at an age that would surprise all of us today. We have come a long way with aging, but not growing old. The word retirement is becoming archaic with reinvention or recreation replacing it. At 65 people are realizing the best half is yet to come. Aging expert Anthony Cirillo has eight lessons in his Meaning of Life Program. Living these lessons keeps aging at bay and gives you energy to accomplish what you want. Author Mark Chimsky knows the greatest potential for growth and self realization exists in the second half of life as well. You start to become who you were meant to be and what could be better than that!

Distracted Driving & Car Safety

Distracted driving has become an acceptable risk that is taken all too frequently. Cell phones are the most common distraction although; there are a number of others. Statistics show that texting and driving is as fatal as drinking and driving as Nick Jarmusz, AAA Safety Representative says. In fact, you are 23 times more likely to be in an accident if you are texting while driving. If you are elderly and not willing to give up your keys it can also be just as risky. Something else to consider with car safety is vehicle maintenance. Pam Oakes, National Automotive Authority knows firsthand that the smallest of details can make the biggest difference with maintenance and car safety. Never forget when driving a car, you are operating a machine and rarely if ever, are the only one on the road.

Career Building at Any Age

The number of working Americans age 65 and over has doubled in the last 15 years with a record of 7.2 million in the work force. Much of this has been driven by 401(k)s decimated, an increase in the social security age and a decrease in those who retire with pensions. Not all is doom and gloom, as working does have its benefits. We stay active, social and with a purpose, which is important as we age. Business and Career Coach, Vickie Austin says a “Career Encore” may be the answer. It could be time to do something you have always wanted to do or discover what you would love to do. Human beings resist change for a multitude of reasons, while creating chaos, conflict and confusion to validate their resistance. Richard Flint teaches that life is all about the choices we make. He uses improvement rather than change as a lead to self empowerment. The word Change brings up emotions and can stifle while the word Improvement allows freedom to work on what you want. Rae Luskin takes it a step further by teaching others to fill their days with color, wonder & joy as they paint a bold vision that encourages them to step up. Rae says that when someone initiates, ignites, invites & inspires it can take them from stuck to unstoppable. Imagine what your 2013 will be like as you bring your unstoppable self to life!
